The Tully Monster, Tullymonstrum gregarium<\/em>, is an extinct creature from about 300 million years ago (That’s tens of millions of years before there were dinosaurs). It\u00a0looks like a squid, has a single arm \u2014 elbow and all \u2014 and has a spinal cord, completely unlike a cephalopod.<\/p>\n

It’s insanely weird.<\/p>\n

So, naturally, I decided to draw it. The problem is, it’s\u00a0so<\/strong> weird, every reconstruction of it looks wrong.\u00a0Its eyes, if those are, indeed, eyes, point straight out to the sides on sticks. It has a single nostril in the front, but lots of little vents along its sides that don’t run down the centerline. The jaws of its pincer\/mouth don’t seem to meet, but instead make this cartoonish sneer shape.<\/p>\n

Go home, evolution. You’re drunk.<\/p>\n

You can read more about it<\/a>, if you wanna, but it’s not going to help you understand. Just know that it has the name\u00a0gregarium<\/em> because there were huge numbers of them.<\/p>\n
