Ashlesan Warrior of the Southern Heart, complete

One of the four mouths of the Warrior.

The little guy’s complete!

First, you roll out a blend of Super Sculpy and Super Sculpy firm over your armature wire.


Then, you cut out the shape, approaching the degree of symmetry you need, occasionally re-rolling the Sculpy blend. Then you burn it in the oven. You may choose to use some profanity at this point. I suggest "God fuck it". So then you do over, and paint them with a series of washes. Along the way, you drill holes for the armature wires and glue the banners in, making sure to break at least one. Then you admire the fuck out of that shit. Zie looks cuter than I wanted.

Ashlesan warrior, about to stomp you. Gills are visible between the halves of the shell and the eating orifice is visible under the raised foot.

Painting is nearly done! You can see a spot I missed completely on the right knee, and there are a couple of spots that still need work, but the body’s just about done. Next come the banners, which will brighten the monochrome substantially. More pics under the cut!

It's hard to see in this lighting, but you can see the blue/purple circulatory system where the skin is thin at joints.

The heavy rear toenails are used to push the warrior forward on its keel so it can simultaneously move and fight with both forelimbs.

I’ve been working on this guy quite a bit. Materials have been about $25. No special tools, but I made some sculpting tools out of music wire and dowels. More pics below the cut!

: You can see the scars from previous fights/matings.

: Formally, it has a cloaca. Informally, it has an “ovipooper”. It also exhales through it.

: They eat through the bottom of their feet. The spikes are for injecting their opponents with their genetic material like a nudibranch.

: The flesh between the halves of the carapace is a spongy, folded flesh. It’s highly vascularized and is where the Warriors breathe in. It’s also where they’re struck by their opponents to become impregnated.
