In this episode, Robert Bohl (designer of Misspent Youth) and Joshua A. C. Newman (designer of shock: social science fiction) discuss major changes to the game, spend a lot of time with feedback, and discuss how Jewish someone has to be in England.

My dear friends! Please, for the love of all that is good and worthwhile in the world, not to mention my own patience, endurance and sanity, please, before you record another episode, please come to a consensus and shared vision about what are the players' jobs in the game.

Designing a game means giving its players jobs, responsibilities, and then giving them the appropriate tools to fulfill them. The only use for spurs, constraints, authority, and other tools – very much including the characters' powers – is to get the players to make good on the responsibilities you've given them.

Until you have and share a clear vision of the players' jobs, every moment you spend designing tools is a moment you're throwing in the crapper.

Good episode, even if you never got to the CYOA part, really.

Bizarrely, about halfway through, I realized you guys were describing a character of mine from almost 20 years ago- a hunter/assassin “bioroid” (biological android) that could change personality and gender at will (in this case, drawing from DNA/psych profiles of anyone s/he'd 'sampled'). S/he had the designation “void \varepsilon” (that's epsilon), which I just thought sounded cool at the time, but a bit of research now reveals to be particularly apt.*

I'm sure there's plenty that's different, too; but I thought it was cool since I hadn't remembered that character in probably ten years and suddenly I was like “this sounds SO familiar!”

Anyway, keep 'em comin' and we'll keep listenin'. Except for those who don't.

* from wikipedia's list of things the epsilon symbol is used for: In automata theory, a transition that involves no shifting of an input symbol… Automata theory is the study of abstract machines and problems which they are able to solve.
