So I have basically a 4K words rules text. Is that okay to just drop in the body of a post or should I link it offsite?

Go read the "How to Critique" sticky post. It'll tell you how you need to minimally format it.

Ah, okay. Looks like I don't meet the minimum standards. Maybe next time.

Because of AP? Just get a couple of people together and play it! The doors'll be open for a couple of weeks, probably, and if you're done before everyone goes back to their home studios, there'll surely be help. If not, then yeah, next time.

No, I've played it a ton. I got the sense that I needed a cover and should have settled on a font.

Oh, no: minimum is that you make it legible. Two columns on letter size is minimum. If you know better than that, by all means.

Then make it clear what you're looking for in the post!

I do not understand what two columns in letter-size means.

Maybe I'm in over my head here.

What word processor are you using?

This is a two-column layout (with sidenotes, but you can ignore that).

It makes the number of characters per line legible. If the text goes all the way across the page, it's easier to lose your place when you go to the next line. If you make the columns shorter, there's this choppy feeling when you're reading.

"Letter" just means regular paper size.

These standards are just so the folks who are reading what you've written have the greatest advantage when trying to read it. It's a courtesy to people who are trying to help you.

You're not over your head. You're at a swimming lesson.

I am using Google Docs. I cruised around looking for ways to set it to two-column but didn't see any.

Edit: Wait I think I got it.

It turns out Google Docs doesn't allow multi-column formatting, probably due to the infuriating limitations of HTML and CSS. There's a multi-column feature of CSS, but it's been a "draft" for a long time. I think it's supposed to be a CSS5 feature, but it won't be widely accepted for years. That means Google Docs won't be a good page layout tool for at least as long.

What platform are you using? If you're on a Mac, Pages in iWork is quite good, if basic. iWork costs $80.

OpenOffice is free, though I haven't used it for years and found it really grating.

I know Word gives you multi-column support, but it's a terrible, terrible layout app; it does all sorts of really awful things to your page and then reduces the amount of actual control you have. If it's all you've got, though, it'll do this much, at least.

There are, of course, more sophisticated apps, but let's start simple.

I fixed it with Word. Someone else is going to be doing my layout for me, I just want it good enough for critiquing.

Great! Get it looking readable, then start a thread about it!

Google Docs does let you modify the page size, although it doesn't seem to work for all of the dimensions they offer (File -> Page Setup -> Paper Size). Setting that to Statement 5.5" x 8.5", exporting to PDF, and then viewing the PDF in 2-up sort of approximates a two-column-landscape format (or a single-column digest size, which is a popular indie format). Joshua, would that be good enough for what Bret is trying to do?

Yeah, that would work OK, though if I wanted to print it out (this is about 16 pages of text, remember), it would be incumbent on me to figure out how to print 2-up. Since the purpose is easy reading of the person doing critique for you, that might not be great.

On the other hand, if you can get the PDF to generate 2-up, I think it would be fine!
