However, about two days before laying (and about four into gestation), the warrior is too pregnant to fight (as the shell doesn't expand to accommodate the volume of the young) and won't signal to do so, hanging back in a battle and camouflaging its banners. When an individual has multiple young gestating, that phase is longer, making the warrior less likely to get pregnant. A herd that loses badly will therefore have stronger numbers next time, while a herd that wins is able to find and impregnate new herds.
